What Do These Results Mean?
The information that you will get from the overweight calculator is what we term your 'BMI' score - your Body Mass Index score. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a relationship between weight and height that is associated with body fat and health risk. Research has identified the health risks associated with a wide range of BMIs (both high and low values.)
What is a Good or Bad BMI score?
A BMI of over 25 is considered overweight. The following is a general guide:
|
A BMI nearing 15 is usually used as an indicator for
starvation and the health risks involved, with a BMI less than 17.5 being an
informal criterion for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa.
Should You Be Concerned With Your BMI Score?
BMI provides a simple numeric measure of a person's "fatness" or "thinness", allowing health professionals to discuss over- and under-weight problems more objectively with their patients. It was designed to be used as a simple means of classifying sedentary (physically inactive) individuals with an average body composition. It is really a reference point to stimulate further discussion and should not be taken in isolation as any form of diagnosis.

How Does BMI Apply To Children?
For children, their BMI is still calculated in the same way using the overweight calculator but the results need to be interpreted differently. For children, you don't take the BMI score in isolation but instead compare the result with the typical results of other children of the same age. This is done by using the BMI chart for girls or the BMI chart for boys.
